Sixty years ago, the U.S. Air Force entered its modern age of aviation when the nation's planes saved West Germans from starvation with food parcels dropped from the sky.

And a special event at the Wings Over Pittsburgh Air Show in Moon Township on Saturday and Sunday will recognize the 60th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, says Col. Gordon Elwell of the 911th Airlift Wing.

"The German government is sending over a large display, and two aircrafts from the airlift of 1948-49. Pittsburgh was chosen as the opening venue for this display. We are thrilled and honored."

The Berlin Airlift display is part of a plethora of military-related displays that will give civilians a look into the inner-workings of the armed forces at one of North America's 10 largest air shows from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m each day.

Another highlight will be the show's featured performer -- the Canadian Snowbirds, who will fly last. The Canadian Forces 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, icons above the border, fly nine jets in up to 50 different formations and maneuvers getting as close at 4 feet apart and reaching speeds up to 470 mph.

It will be their first Wings Over Pittsburgh appearance and, like the other 14 performers, they will do a performance each day.

The F-22 Raptor, the Air Force's newest fighter aircraft; F/A-18 Hornet, a tactical plane; and the F-16 Fighting will provide demonstrations.

U.S. Navy Leap Frogs and the U.S. Army Golden Knights will open each day with jumps and intricate formations. Other performers include stunt flier Sean Tucker and his Oracle Challenger biplane.

Admission is free. Once in Moon Township, visitors should follow signs to parking lots providing free shuttles. No coolers and bags are permitted. Strollers, wagons and folding chairs are encouraged.

Gates close at 3 p.m.
