Salvatore Volpe

Alcoa engineer

Salvatore Volpe, 79, a long-time resident of Moon Township, died on Friday, April 18, 2008, in Sewickley Valley Hospital.

He was born in Roggiano Gravina, Provincia di Cosenza, Italy, on July 18, 1928, one of eight children of the late Giuseppe and Rosina Volpe.

Mr. Volpe was well educated and had a tremendous work ethic. He graduated from Seuole Indrustriale in Colleferro, Italy, with a degree in chemistry.

He was chosen for a scholarship to attend Washington University of St. Louis as an exchange student. He obtained a mechanical engineering degree from University of Pittsburgh, and in 1968 he received his professional engineering license.

He began his engineering career as a leader for Auburn Engineering and Associates in Pittsburgh, going on to work for Alcoa, from where he retired after 26 years of service.

After retirement, he cultivated a love for the Earth as a gardener. He grew vegetables, sharing them with family and friends.

His other hobby of wine-making made many people feel special when they received some of his homemade wine or shared a glass with him over friendly conversation.

He met his lovely wife of 53 years, Carmela Lucia, in Italy, and they married in January, 1955. They came to the United States the same year on a the ship, Andrea Doria, settling in Pittsburgh and making their home in Moon Township.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his children and their spouses, Joe and Pam Volpe, North Canton, Ohio, Rosetta and Harry Dufalla of Moon, Sandra and Sean McCurdy of Moon; six cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Elizabeth and Peter Volpe, Marie Dufalla, and Daniel and Megan McCurdy; a sister, Lina Volpe of Italy; three brothers and their wives, Fausto and Nanda Volpe, Emilio and Pina Volpe and Vitorio and Rita Volpe, all of Italy; sister-in-law, Marina Volpe of Italy; and brother and sister-in-law, Emmanuel and Dolores Lucia of Virginia.

In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his siblings, Mario Salvatore and Aldo Volpe.

Friends were received in Copeland's Moon Township Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Margaret Mary Church. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

James Butterini
World War II veteran

James Butterini, 82, of Moon Township, died on Thursday, April 3, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Butterini was a Marine who served in World War II. He was wounded in Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart for his honor and bravery shown toward his country.

He retied from RB&W in Coraopolis in 1987, after which he discovered the game of golf that became his passion. Known to his family and friends as "JB," he was the type of man everyone loved. JB always was ready to lend a helping hand. One of his greatest joys was being able to fix something for someone. His grandchildren learned at an early age that a broken toy put into grandpa's work bench "in box," was quickly returned good as new.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Andeline Butterini; children and their spouses, Jan and Dick Deaner, Joyce and Jim Musone and Jeanne and Barry Dowiak; sisters, Edith Yusi, Irene Lingenfelter and Betty Gibson; grandchildren, Chris and Tara Fields, Tyler and Alana Dowiak, Jason and his wife, Kathy Rumburg and Ben and his wife, Hillary, Rumburg; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Friends were received in Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home, Coraopolis, where a prayer service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Joseph Church, Coraopolis.

Guido Tollis
Coraopolis resident

Guido Tollis, 79, of Coraopolis, died on Saturday, March 22, 2008.

He was the son of the late Pasquale and Antonina (Puglielli) Tollis.

His wife, Carole Tollis, also preceded him in death.

Surviving are his children, Antoinette, Sandy, Donald, Patricia and David Tollis and Marianne and her husband, Louis Desiderio; grandchildren, Nicole and Staci Desiderio; siblings, Caroline Cavicchia, Marie DiMasso, Amelia Ciarallo, Anna Demme and Letita Tollis and many nephews, nieces and good friends.

Friends were received in Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home, Coraopolis, where a prayer service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Joseph Church, Coraopolis. Entombment was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Dolores Stemmler
Born in Coraopolis

Dolores "Mimi" Stemmler, 95, of Coraopolis, died peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2008.

She was born in Coraopolis on Aug. 2, 1912.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 51 years, Frank Stemmler, and siblings, Ross and Raymond Donovan and Elizabeth McGregor.

Surviving are her children and their spouses, David and Cathy Stemmler and Francine and John Tussey; grandchildren, Shaun, Chad, Jocelyn, Hannah, Valerie and Brad; great-granddaughter, Zoe; and siblings, David, James and Lawrence Donovan and Mary Vish.

Friends were received in Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home, Coraopolis, where a prayer service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Joseph Church, Coraopolis.

Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery, Moon.

Luisa DeChellis
Christian Mother

Luisa "Mama" DeChellis, 99, a long-time resident of Coraopolis, died on Monday, March 3, 2008, in Masonic Village, Sewickley.

She was born in Pacentro, Italy, a daughter of the late Vincenizo and Angela Galterio DeMartinis.

Mrs. DeChellis was a member of St. Joseph Church and Christian Mothers.

Preceding her in death were her husband, John DeChellis, and three infant children.

Her son, Carmen "Jimmy" DeChellis, survives.

Friends were received in Anthony J. Sanvito Funeral Home, Coraopolis, where a prayer service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph Church, Coraopolis.
