Bleier: "Never give up on what you want to become"
NEW CASTLE, PA (June 27, 2007)—Rocky Bleier battled adversity to become an integral part of a dynasty. Bleier, who recovered from injuries suffered after being deployed to Vietnam in 1969, put forth a stellar career as a running back of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.
Bleier, will speaking on Saturday night at Slippery Rock University's N. Kerr Thompson Stadium when the New Castle Thunder hosts the Beaver County Warriors in the first annual Albert P. Gettings Memorial Game. Bleier said that his combined experience in the military, as well as his advocacy and love for football are two things that heightened his interest in speaking on June 30.
“I feel a great allegiance to the military,” Bleier said. “Over these many years, that short period of my life has expanded.”
Humbly, Bleier asserted that he didn't face some of the hardships that fellow soldiers have faced through the years, but that he takes part in veterans' activities and is proud of his association with the military.
Following his discharge from the military, Bleier was given an opportunity by the Steelers, but it didn't come easy. Bleier was placed on the team's injured reserve list his first season after his time in the military. The second season, he was placed on the taxi squad, followed by special teams the year after that. Finally, several years after returning home from Vietnam , Bleier had the opportunity to start for the eventual SuperBowl winners
“The organization gave me an opportunity,” Bleier said. But Bleier also said that it takes persistence to reach one's goal. “An individual kind of has to have a drive.”
Bleier said that young people in society need to dream, to have goals and ideas of what they wish to become.
“You have to believe that you have the potential,” Bleier said. “Never give up what you want to become. You take it one level at a time. All of those things will fall into place.”
Bleier will be speaking during halftime of the game which will kickoff at 7 p.m.
