Romance in the air for diners at Clarks

Among the trees, bushes and plants sits a chipmunk in the most unlikely place.

He lives outside building four in the middle of Airport Office Park in Moon Township.

While most of the buildings around him are surrounded by concrete, the chipmunk's home is circled with greenery featuring small, white twinkle lights.

He peers inside the big glass windows at Clarks Restaurant which inside features more plants and even a large tree, also adorned with twinkle lights. Crystal Krznar, owner of Clarks, sits right inside at one of the tables and smiles with delight to see him.

She also smiles when she talks of how she and her husband, Bob, bought the restaurant two years ago. First they joined their assets to buy the restaurant, and in September last year, they decided to join their hearts as well.

Crystal says the romantic atmosphere seemed like the perfect location for their wedding reception. "It's so beautiful at night with the lights and the food."

It was also just the right place to start their new lives together, especially since it is where they both made their dreams of owning their own business come true.

Bob worked for both owners of Clarks, then known as P.J. Clarks. It originally was owned by Airport Office Park landlords who then sold it, by coincidence, to the owner of the Clark Bar factory in Pittsburgh.

Crystal had been running an Asian restaurant, and before had worked as a bartender and managed other restaurants for 22 years. "I always wanted a place of my own," she says.

When the couple bought the restaurant, Crystal says they changed the menu and made some improvements.

Today Clarks has 10 employees, a full-service bar, a wide, flat screen television, a dining area which holds 65 in the front, a banquet-type room, which seats 35 in the back, and an outside patio that now seats 20 and will soon be expanded.

The cloth-covered tables complement the big, cushioned high-back chairs, and customers can order from a variety of entrees.

Offered are filet mignon, New York strip steak, ribs (which Crystal says she thinks are the best around), chicken margherite (two chicken breasts lightly breaded and baked), steak and Caesar salads, jumbo gulf shrimp, broiled cod, surf and turf, crab cakes, beer battered fish, shrimp scampi and pierogies.

Crystal says her favorite entree is the chicken marsala, which features chicken breast medallions sauteed with mushrooms and a marsala wine. The raspberry walnut chicken is Clarks signature dish, which Crystal says diners don't find too often in other area restaurants.

Soups are homemade including cream of asparagus, cream of broccoli, tomato basil, clam chowder, wedding soup, potato cheddar bacon, stuffed pepper and French onion.

Many appetizers and a variety of sandwiches also are available along with flatbread pizza and burgers.

Clarks also has a large wine list and offers happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, when $1.50 drafts are featured along with a 50-cent discount on all other drinks. A free happy hour buffet is featured from 5 to 7 p.m. on Fridays.

Although most of the time, Clarks is closed on Sunday, it will be open for a Mother's Day buffet on May 14. Reservations are suggested as they are for dinner reservations at all times.

Entertainment also is featured once a month.
