New sections for many area teams
Look out Triple-A, here come the Tigers.
The WPIAL released its realignment for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 winter sports seasons last month, with one of the most notable changes being Moon's drop to Class AAA, after recording the most wins in Quad-A of any WPIAL team over the last two years.
The Tigers were placed in Section 4-AAA with neighboring opponents Montour and West Allegheny, along with Chartiers Valley, Keystone Oaks, South Park and West Mifflin, keeping Moon inside Allegheny County for its section games for the next two seasons.
One of the interesting matchups will be Moon against Chartiers Valley, where Ackermann works and previously coached under Colts coach Tim McConnell.
"He's someone that's been kind of a mentor to me, and was probably instrumental in me getting the Moon job in the first place," Ackermann said.
"It'll be tough, because he's a great coach, and they bring everyone back except one senior off a team that won 20 games last year."
In Class A, Cornell and OLSH were kept together in a new-look Section 4-A. The Raiders might be lonely though, as Cornell is the only public school in a section that features Vincentian, Trinity Christian, Quigley and early favorites Sewickley Academy.
"It looks like it's going to be a good section, but you never know how good some of those teams will be, because they can go out and bring people in," Cornell coach Bill Sacco said.
"I like that everyone is closer. Last year we traveled to the outskirts and had 50-mile road trips, so at least this year, we'll get home at a decent time."
In girls basketball, Moon bumps up to Quad-A, replacing New Castle in Section 3-AAAA, where they will face teams like North Allegheny and Seneca Valley. OLSH's girls join Section 3-AA against the likes of Bishop Canevin, Seton-La Salle, South Fayette and Brentwood.
Cornell also moves, joining a reconfigured Section 2-A that will make life tough on the Raiders. Fort Cherry and Chartiers-Houston drop into the group from Class AA, while Avella, Clairton and Serra Catholic give the group five playoff teams from last season.
"I was surprised, because I thought they might leave our section alone," Cornell coach Shawn Urbano said.
"We were disappointed, because we wanted to stay in our old section. Now we have to start over, and we don't know anything about the other teams."
Section assignments for Moon's and Cornell's swim teams stays nearly identical to this year's, while Moon's wrestling section is also the same, except for the new A/B subdivisions introduced to make scheduling easier.
