Moon swim teams end strong

Moon had a strong two days, picking up several event finals appearances at the PIAA Class AAA swimming and diving championships at Bucknell last week.

The girls relay teams were the Tigers' strength all year, and the team started the meet with a good showing in the 200-yard medley.

The team of Alexis Berdine, Selina Breiner, Zina Grogg and Brittany Pales turned in a qualifying time of 1:51.61, the 10th-best time and good for a spot in the consolation finals.

In the finals, the team slipped to 12th, yet they improved on their time with a 1:50.46.

Later on Day 1, the 200-yard freestyle team of Berdine, Stephanie Dombrowski, Pales and Grogg made it two consolation finals for Moon, swimming a 1:39.92 The team was 15th after the finals, turning in a time of 1:40.33.

In the lone Day 2 relay event, the 400-yard freestyle, Moon's team of Dombrowski, Pales, Grogg and Berdine missed the finals with a qualifying time of 3:42.61, placing them 21st.

Individually, Grogg had Moon's single best performance by making the championship finals of the 100-yard butterfly.

The sophomore's preliminary time of 57.45 was sixth-best in that round, which she improved on by placing fifth in the final, dropping her time to 57.16.

Berdine was the Tigers' other individual girls competitor, swimming the 100-yard backstroke. She just missed the finals, swimming a preliminary time of 1:00.75.

That time placed her in a tie for 19th-place, while missing the consolation finals by a mere .37 seconds.

Moon's lone male competitor was Nick Hamilton, as the senior was qualified in the 200-yard freestyle. He missed out on his finals just like Berdine, finishing in a 19th-place tie.

Hamilton's time of 1:45.48 was .99 seconds away from a consolation finals berth.
