Moon slates recycling day
Environmentalism may the world's hottest trend in everything from clothing to food.
On Saturday, Moon Township residents can show their "green" side close to home during the community's third annual Recycling Day.
Slated for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Moon Park amphitheater rain or shine, the event is sponsored by Environmental Advisory Council, which expects the effort to be more widely attended this year than ever, according to says Janet Thorne, council vice president.
"It's hard to tell, but we are hopeful, as the event becomes known throughout the township, people will think of things that they have that they would like to recycle rather than throw in a trash dump."
Accepting items at Recycling Day once again will be a handful of conservation companies focused on tire-removal, reusable construction material and electronic reclamation.
Township residents can recycle most anything that has broken, stopped working or served its purpose in their household since last year's event.
Stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners and air humidifiers will be accepted for no charge unless the item contains Freon. A $15 charge disposal charge then will apply.
Any electronic items including computers, printers, copiers, DVD players, VCRs, televisions, microwaves and stereos will cost $10 per carload.
An additional charge of $5 will be assessed, if a resident requires a computer hard drive to be destroyed.
Construction Junction, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit organization, will take gently-used or new sinks, toilets, cabinets and windows for its shopper's warehouse.
The conservation group also accepts leftover tile, hardware, insulation, shingles that could be remnants from a finished building project or simply left in a house from a previous owner.
Tires up to 18 inches also will be accepted at $1 each. Larger tires up to 26 inches are $6 per tire. Tires with rims are $5 extra.
Cash only will be accepted for all recycled goods and anything rejected requires owners' disposal. Though a monetary amount is included, the payback for recycling benefits everyone for years to come, says Thorne.
"There is a only a finite amount of landfill space. When we fill it up, we don't have the space to throw away things that can be reused."
And even bringing a couple items helps add up to larger goals like the 650 tires, 16,500 pounds of electronics and more than 150 Freon appliances collected in Moon since 2006.
"All of these things, if you only get a few of them, you are making progress. Even a few things recycled is a benefit to the community."
