McKeesport: Byrd expected to be Tigers go-to guy

McKeesport finds itself searching for numerous replacements for its starting lineup, but that doesn't discourage coach George Smith, who said "the potential is there" to have a another strong team this season.

The Tigers, two years removed from winning the PIAA Quad A championship, must replace versatile quarterback Kamryn Keys, who had many more rushing yards (1,369) than passing (332) in McKeesport's option offense last season.

Senior James Eckels appears to be the likely successor, Smith said. He'll be joined in the backfield by Akron recruit Marvace Byrd.

"Marvace has been an exceptional running back for us. He played quite a bit in that championship season (in 2005)," Smith said.

"Fullback will be by committee."

The offensive line has been a troublesome issue for Smith, but he said there is enough size and potential to be successful.

Defensively, McKeesport is inexperienced. Dan Kessler, a converted offensive guard, has played defensive tackle. Linebacker Tom Patil returns after playing extensively the past two seasons, and Byrd will double at safety.

"Almost every position is going to be manned by newcomers," he said.

McKeesport opens a brutal schedule Friday against North Hills in a non-conference game.

"Hopefully, by the time we get into the conference, we'll have a better idea of how to win," Smith said.
