Local students honored with Good Citizen Awards
Jacob Ferree Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has recognized seven students with Good Citizens Awards.
Local students are Evelyn (Meggan) Stevens, Cornell High School; Amy Rich, Moon Area High School; and Louis Trapizona Jr., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School.
Winners were awarded a $100 Savings Bond, a pin and a certificate at DAR's American History Tea held at Montour Heights Country Club.
Students were chosen by their high school counselors for these qualities.
Meggan, a senior and daughter of Elizabeth and Curtis Stevens, is involved in many community and school volunteer activities, clubs and extracurricular pursuits and is first in her class of 55.
She says believes the four Good Citizen qualities are her four strongest attributes that have made her into the young woman she is today. She believes she has maintained leadership in her school by being a positive role model to her peers.
Her volunteer work has involved helping with Thanksgiving dinners delivery, Special Olympics, Multiple Schlerosis Walk, children's Easter egg hunt, Three Rivers Art Festival, senior citizen's prom, World Vision, Autumn Lane carnival, kindergarten assistance, Christmas with the elderly and Fun in the Sun at Cornell.
After graduation, Meggan plans on attending college to major in psychology. She has been accepted at numerous colleges but has not yet made a final decision about which to attend.
Meggan also received a $5,000 NEED Leadership Scholarship, for which she was recognized at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel.
Amy Rich, daughter of Fran and Larry Rich of Moon, is a senior and headed toward Penn State University in the fall. Her major is undecided, but she is leaning toward biology.
At Moon, her activities include serving as class president, being a varsity member of the tennis team (captain and treasurer) and varsity member of the track and field team; developing and organizing the first Mr. Moon High School pageant, and participating in prom committee, powder puff football, science club, SADD and technology club.
Community and volunteer services include CCD teacher, recreational basketball coach, volunteer at Corp. Pokorny fund-raiser, Darfur fund-raiser car wash and Relay for Life.
Other special honors and awards include National Honor Society, honor roll, scholar athlete award, Character of the Month, Outstanding Achievement Award and Honor and Character Award.
She also has served as a camp counselor, a babysitter, recreational basketball referee and time keeper, clerical worker for Alfa Inc. and employee for Moon Township Parks and Recreation.
Louis, son of Louis and Donna Trapizona of Sewickley, is an OLSH senior and representative for OLSH on the Diocesan Youth Council. He also is a peer helper at OLSH and a student ambassador.
He plays volleyball and is a member of the Campus Ministry Team.
He says he is not sure which college he will attend, but he plans to major in biology.
Others receiving Good Citizens Awards were Angela Chimile, South Side High School; Rose George, Sto Rox High School; Victor Anthony Martinelli IV, Montour High School, and Lindsay Rosso -- West Allegheny High School,
Also recognized at the event was Tyler Graziani from West Allegheny Middle School for his winning essay titled "I Spy--Espionage During the American Revolution."
