Coraopolis plans birthday bash

In Austria, 122 is the fire emergency number.

In Egypt, the people call 122 when there is a police emergency, and in China, when there is a traffic emergency number, people also call 122.

The TV series, Cannon, ran on CBS for 122 episodes from 1971 to 1976.

The number 122 also represents the oldest age any person is known to have lived (Jeanne Calment, 1875-1997).

In Coraopolis, 122 has a much different meaning. It was in 1886 -- 122 years ago -- that the borough was incorporated.

At one time, Coraopolis had two other names, Middletown and Fort Vance. The name Coraopolis became official on June 7, 1886.

And, June 7 is the day that the borough will celebrate its birthday with activities, prizes and free cake and drinks

The event, organized by Coraopolis Historical Society, is a birthday celebration that Jackie Smith, coordinator, says will be the first of many.

"We want to build up to 125," she says. "We want people to start looking at Coraopolis as more viable, and we want people to stay in the community to shop."

With that goal in mind, the historical society is asking businesses to offer sales and discounts the week before the event, starting Monday, June 2.

On Saturday, June 7, businesses are encouraged to set up sidewalks sales during the birthday celebration. Smith says businesses that are not visible from Fourth and Fifth avenues are asked to set up tables closer to the area to let visitors know about the stores on the other end of town.

Local organizations also will be a part of the event. Beth Miles, founder of Protect our Pups, will be selling hot dogs and pop and display information about the organization.

Coraopolis Kiwanis will be selling water and handing out information about the services and scholarships the club provides.

The National Guard will have give-a-ways for children. A Humvee and an ambulance Humvee also will be on hand for children to explore.

Network of Hope, through Coraopolis Church of God, also will hand out information on various activities and charity work the organization provides.

Coraopolis Moose Club will provide a table with popcorn and hand out brochures about its activities, in particular "Moose Haven."

McDonald's will set up a table with free drinks and hand out employment applications.

Willy's Bike Shop, which raffles off a bike each month, will have the give-a-way during the event. Those attending can enter the raffle in the morning until about noon when the the winner will be announced.

ESB Bank will give away a U.S. Savings Bond to a child who participates in the event by making a poster to display in businesses on Fourth and Fifth avenues. Smith says it is not a poster contest, but those who participate will be entered into a raffle for the bond.

Local children, from Head Start, Presbyterian Day Care, Cornell and other elementary school children are participating.

Head Start children made balloons out of construction paper to display at ESB Bank as part of the birthday celebration activities.

From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., local DJ, Uncle Al, will volunteer to spin oldies tunes in the gazebo parking lot.

At noon, the crowd will sing Happy Birthday, and those attending will receive a free piece of birthday cake. Local Boy Scout troops will pass out cake and clean up afterwards.

Businesses owners and organizations are asked to contact Jackie Smith at ESB Bank at 412-264-8862 if they would like to participate.
