Burgers abound at new University Club in Moon

Tracy Ellwood's life has gone from briefcases to burgers, and that's the way she likes it.

A paralegal for 20 years, the Moon Township resident recently decided she needed a career change. After a few years of looking around, she has finally found what she was looking for.

Earlier this month, Ellwood stepped behind the bar of her new restaurant-lounge, University Club, and celebrated its grand opening.

Although it is located in the Glass Tower Hotel on University Boulevard in Moon, it is separate from the hotel, Ellwood says.

Its specialty is the Black Angus burgers -- about 15 different kinds. Customers can choose from chili-cheese, cajun, Italian, mushroom and swiss, spicy with green peppers, onions and red pepper flakes, bacon and cheddar and plenty more, all on fresh keiser rolls.

Appetizers such as provolone sticks, nachos and chili-cheese fries also are available along with other bar-type foods.

More will be added to the menu as time goes on, Ellwood says.

Aside from the unique burgers, she also plans to bring back the live bands and jam sessions that the restauarant had been known for in the past.

Ellwood says she chose to go into the restauarant business because she has always been a fan of the food industry. She has wanted to have her own place for a long time, but she wanted one with a bar and wanted to provide a fun atmosphere.

With that in mind, she attended bartending school, but when she tried to get hired as a bartender, the restaurants only wanted experienced workers.

She then went back to her paralegal job as she and her husband, Jim, looked for a place of their own.

It took awhile, she says, because most of the places they looked at needed too many renovations.

When the restaurant became available in The Glass Tower, the Ellwoods jumped at the chance. It only took about two weeks worth of elbow grease to get it all up and running, and the couple added pool tables, a dart board and big screen television.

"We are going to try to get a nice little sports bar going here," Jim says.

Jim plans to keep his full time job as an electronics technician at an East Liverpool, Ohio, waste incinerator and help at University Club when he can.
