Borough, CESA to share road repair costs

Coraopolis Borough is getting some street repairs done at a discount in conjunction with part of Coraopolis and Water Sewer Authority's multi-million dollar water and sewer renovation project.

Council voted last week to split the cost of extending road work on the 1200 block of Vance Avenue to include the entire street, although PennVEST, which has provided a low interest loan for the project, will only pay for the part of the road affected by sewer work being completed by Chivers Construction.

Originally, the contract called for $55,250 to replace the bricks on part of the street after sewer work is completed.

By using asphalt instead, that cost decreases to $40,000.

To repair the rest of the street with asphalt, from McIntyre Alley to Fleming Street will cost $27,207.

Council will pay half of that cost, and Tom Cellante, borough manager, said the cost will not have to come out of the borough's funds for street projects.

"That will button up that street with new water lines, new sewer lines and a new road," Cellante said.

Etore Pitassi, councilman, said he was concerned about using asphalt instead of brick because brick lasts so much longer.

"If we replaced the bricks, they would last another 100 years," Pitassi said.

William Del Monaco, councilman, said he believed asphalt would be adequate on the street because it doesn't have a lot of truck traffic.

While the road is torn up, CWSA members have suggested replacing an old waterline under the road, although officials do not know the age or condition of the line.

Rich Deems, water superintendent, said last month that there has been no problems with that line, and he guesses it is about 100 years old.

John Pessy, CWSA board member and council president, suggested the line be evaluated as Chivers completes sewer work in that area and asked that Deems present his findings to the authority at the next meeting.
