Award winners announced at annual event

For the second summer in a row, Kennywood invites residents to Celebrate America with a week-long salute to the red, white and blue.

The fun begins on Sunday, July 1, and continues through Friday, July 6. A special highlight will be at 5 p.m. on July 1 when the winners in Kennywood and Gateway Newspapers' coloring contest will be announced. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of the three age categories.

The awards will be presented at the high dive platform in a special ceremony, according to Mary Lou Rosemeyer, director of public relations for the park. All winners are invited to participate in the 6 p.m. parade, following the ceremony.

The award-winning entries will be displayed at Kennywood throughout Celebrate America.

All the winners will receive free admission to the park and have their picture taken with Kenny Kangaroo in addition to their prizes. All those who participated in the contest can purchase up to three discount tickets ($10) at Celebrate America headquarters at the park that Sunday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The contest entries will be at the headquarters where they can be exchanged for the discount fee, Sunday only.

Throughout the week, as part of Celebrate America, there will be roving stilt walkers, mimes, jugglers, unicyclists and magicians.

A special stage will be set up in Pavilion 23 for bands playing patriotic favorites.

The Pirates of Kenny Cove High Dive Show will follow the 5 p.m. awards presentation. Show times are 1:30, 3:30. 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. daily.

At 6 p.m. during Celebrate America, there will be a processional of specialty, antique and racing cars on display for the event will start out each evening, followed by the traditional parade that winds its way around the park.

Each night ends with fireworks.
