All three area schools miss on postseason
The softball teams from Moon, OLSH and Cornell will all miss out on this year's WPIAL playoffs, with the Tigers and Chargers both being eliminated in the season's final week.
Moon had the biggest disappointment, finishing in fourth place with an 8-7 record in Section 1-AAA. The Tigers were tied with Ambridge for the final playoff spot, which went to the Bridgers for winning two of the three meetings with Moon this season.
Moon topped Hopewell, 12-8, after breaking out with a five-run first inning on Monday. Lea Kronz had four hits and Mikaela Longo homered to back winning pitcher Alicia Aughton, improving Moon to 8-8 overall.
"The girls played well yesterday, and I told them we had to win that game to have any chance," Moon coach Amy Aloi said.
"I know we have a lot of potential, and I was hoping we'd get to show it in the playoffs, but it didn't work out that way. We have a young team, and hopefully we've worked out all the kinks and come back next year with a winning attitude."
For OLSH, missing the playoffs became official on the field with a 5-1 loss against Avonworth on Monday. The game was Avonworth's sixth win in Section 3-A play, securing third place for the Antelopes.
The Chargers, 4-10 in-section and 5-13 overall after the loss, still had a section game remaining at North Catholic on Tuesday and a non-section contest against Perry scheduled for yesterday.
"We lost some seniors last year that were hard to replace," OLSH coach Bill Wills said.
"The kids we have played hard, but we came up against a lot of stiff competition and a lot of kids that play travel ball all summer."
Cornell ended its season by dropping a doubleheader to Avonworth on Tuesday, ending the year at 0-16.
