The Dark Side of The Moon
8 years of MASD news.
In 2000,the district athletic director was told that Szczepankowski was verbally abusing a student. In 2002 other girls started complaining about the coach, their parents sought action from school officials. September 2002, parents wrote a letter asking principal Michael Hauser to investigate. In November school officials decided not to take any action. They said Szcz had not been disciplined prior to his suspension. Moon school solicitor Jack Cambest told Van Osdol, "If no action was taken, it was determined there was no violation of school district policy." Moon police are continuing to investigate allegations that Szczepankowski had sexual relations with a student.
Extra Pay for Extra Duty position to Co-breakfast monitor to Beth Chester. Moon police said Beth Ann Chester also told them she and the student had sex in her car while it was parked in the school's parking lot.
Jamie Morton, who is aquatics director and varsity swim coach in the Moon Area School District, filed a federal age and sex discrimination lawsuit against the school district.
The third court action in as many months by school directors Peggy Bell and Mary Tobin could postpone or halt her (Dr.Milanovich)planned appointment. The lawsuit states that the board failed to give the necessary five-day notice of the meeting as required by the public school code. And who was the board secretary in charge of sending out the notice?? Mary Tobin perhaps?
We are aggressively addressing the mold problem. Our number one goal is to make sure the school is safe for students, staff and visitors," said Michael Hauser, high school principal.( Oh yeah? What about coach Szcz and Beth Chester) School officials say "black mold" was found and as a result they closed off a stairwell and two bathrooms.
Current Moon Area School District kindergarten students will be making history at age 10, becoming the first fifth-grade class to attend the district's middle school. Too bad the little children won't have Mr. Hauser to keep them safe cause there won't be any $$$ left to renovate the current high school into a middle school.

Jane,
This is all true albeit most of it is removed sentence by sentence from news articles - a trick that oftentimes distorts information without giving background information. All these things have happened in Moon. That's true and I will give you that. But wow what a sad existence you must live to only focus on the negative aspects of your community. I dare allege that you support a different school board and somehow believe that if that board majority was in power NONE of this would have happened. Well guess what at least one of the above-mentioned items was occuring under their watch. Let's just break down your out of context pulls from news articles here with a little fleshing out as writers like to say.
2. Beth Chester. What does it matter that she got extra pay for being a breakfast monitor. Where her co-monitors and the administration supposed to know that sleeping with your student made her incapable of watching other students eat cereal.
3. The third court action - Mary Tobin may have been the secretary at the time, but the point was that five board members circumvented her. She and three other members had no idea this was going on, so it would have been hard for her to send out a letter.
4. Jamie Morton's lawsuit was ridiculous and a slap in the face to many people who supported him. It was neither age or sex discrimination that caused that situation. It was financial concerns that could be not be proven.
5. I'm not even going to touch the mold issue since you obviously pulled that from at least two different articles. You might have done a little more research to see the funds that have been spent to repair the mold problem. As well if you are worried about the mold why the comment about lacking money for the building project. A person like yourself should want that repaired. This project needs done and if you dont' believe it take a tour of the middle school. Call and ask I'm sure admin would love to arrange for yourself or any other unbelievers out there in this project's neccessity.
6. With the administrators raises, what does that have to do with the misssing money. There was no oversight. Everyone in Moon knows this. How that could be everyone's problem when it was disappearing without being recorded is your guess.
In conclusion, if you are going to pull lines from area newspapers (The Record, cough, cough) maybe you could have pulled some of the positive stories about Moon students, too.
How about the kids supporting Relay for Life, the one winning a county-wide film contest and thousands for the district, the family with impeccable attendance records, Girls Night Out, Allard families and their giving tree, dedicated musicians who make it to state-level competitions, Moon's involvement in a pilot computer program in alliance with CMU and the state attorney general. This is a short list. How about you read with a less selective eye next time. Just a suggestion.
I would love see and read more positive things about Moon. It would be great to read that Moon is a blue ribbon district. It would be comforting to send children to school secure in knowing that they will be safe. It would be refreshing not to have taxes raised at every opportunity. The township would be a more beautiful place if not for the vast amount of litter. To know that Cornell implimented and applied the EDLINE system 2 years ago without a contract while Moon continues to let that asset go mostly unused is frustrating and detrimental to our students. To reward those responsible for the finances and activities of a school while tens of thousands of dollars go missing is confounding. To design a "community center"/high school in todays environment without energy efficiencies and sustainabilities built in is foolish. During the Girls Night Out event that I volunteered, the yellow tape did not prevent escapes into the night. That same night "Choking Game" was painted on the hallway but would not be discussed. Having to rely on the website of another district to get a summer reading list is just plain wrong.
BUT---
Your advice will be taken. I will look for the positive this year, my glass will be half full. I will optimistically look forward to a new and improved Moon. Hopefully, there will be more focus on the MASD music department and their continued successes.
